| At the time of going to press yesterday afternoon contractors were putting the last finishing touches to their work, following a month long repair and upgrade project at the Walvis Bay syncrolift. The left necessitated Namport to close this ship repair facility for the month of February.
The Namib Times was informed yesterday that the upgrade and maintenance project cost in the vicinity of N$8 million and the facility is now ready again to serve Walvis Bay indefinitely.
Rails were replaced, the concrete surfacing of the repair bays were replaced and bogies were reconditions and provided with new bearings and wheels. New infrastructure includes a ballast water outlet. In the past there was a problem efficiently channelling seawater from the vessel’s ballast tanks back to the sea, but with this reticulation system it is a problem solved.
·By yesterday afternoon the syncrolift was ready to accommodate the first vessels. According to the schedule the first vessel to have been lifted late yesterday or early today is the fishing vessel “Kamali”. |
