| The Chief Executive Officer of the Walvis Bay Municipality Mr. Muronga Haingura reacted to an article in Friday's edition of the Namib Times, challenging several observations made by the Auditor-General of Namibia in the audit of the accounts of the Municipality of Walvis Bay for the year ended 30 June 2008. The newspaper reported on these observations.
Mr. Haingura pointed right at the start of the interview with the editor of the newspaper Mr. Floris Steenkamp that until today the Municipality of Walvis Bay had not received this report from the Office of the Auditor-General.
The copy of the report in the possession of the Municipality of Walvis Bay is strictly regarded as unofficial, on account that Mr. Haingura collected the report himself at the offices of the Auditor-General for his own information and awaits an official delivery of such report before the Mayor of Walvis Bay can table that to Council for consideration.
He pointed out that in the light of that the Mayor of Walvis Bay can only table the officially received report in Council, in line with the provisions of the Local Authorities Act.
Mr. Haingura further pointed out the auditors appointed by the Auditor-General never afforded the Municipality the opportunity to respond to any written queries that arose during the audit.
Instead the report was compiled and tabled in Parliament in September last year, now leaving the impression of a number of shortcomings detected whilst in actual fact there are reasonable explanations for most of these queries.
·Namib Times will deal with these queries in its next edition this coming Friday, 12 March 2010. |
