Carcasses of 86 dolphins found on the beach north of Lüderitz
The crew of a rock lobster vessel made the grim discovery on Friday of the decaying carcasses of 86 Dusky Dolphins on the beach at Hottentot Bay, approximately 60 km north of Lüderitz.
The skipper immediately notified the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources at Lüderitz. A small team of researchers were dispatched to the scene on Saturday morning. “The scene that greeted us was beyond sad. Altogether, 86 Dusky Dolphins, including two new-borns and several juvenile dolphins were scattered on the beach. All were in an advanced stage of decay”, one researcher reported.
Another researcher explained it is unclear as to what may have caused this mass stranding.
