Cgals Chamber Choir wins Gold

The Cgals Chamber Choir of Namibia won gold and became the category winners in the VP3 Pop, Jazz and Spiritual category, and silver in the VP2 Adult Choirs category at the virtual 11th World Choir Games that started on 30 October and ended on 7 November in Antwerp and Ghent, Flanders, Belgium.

The 2020 World Choir Games did not take place due to the outbreak of Covid-19. The Games were postponed to October 2021. Travel to this prestigious event presented great difficulties for many choirs around the world, and thus organizers created the opportunity to have a virtual competition for choirs unable to travel.
The World Choir Games is the largest global choral festival and competition held every second year and organised by the Interkultur in Frankfurt, Germany for amateur choirs from all over the world, regardless of their country of origin, race, and genre of music or artistic ambitions. Interkultur’s motto is “Singing together brings nations together”.
The Cgals Chamber Choir is known internationally and loved locally, and is ranked under the top 400 choirs in the world. This category win will improve the current ranking even further after these World Choir Games. This choir is without doubt recognized as one of the vanguard female vocal ensembles in the SADC region in general and Namibia in particular.
The Cgals Chamber Choir that was founded in 1998 has participated in four World Choir Games. In their first games in 2014 they won four silver in Riga, Latvia, in 2016 they won the Musica Sacra category and three silvers in Russia and in 2018 they won one silver and two bronze medals in South Africa.
The Cgals Chamber choir is a private choir under the auspices of well-known Choir Conductor, Performer, Arranger and International School of Walvis Bay Music Teacher Wilna Liebenberg. The choir that is part of “Wilna Music” comprises of 23 female singers between the ages of 12 to 71 years old from Walvis Bay and Swakopmund.
The choir recently participated in the UNISA Advanced Choir Examination where they passed with 90%, placing them on the UNISA Honorary Roll.

For an opportunity to witness Cgals Chamber choir perform, the public are invited to attend two concerts at the coast. The first will be on Friday, 26 November at the NG Church Hall behind the International School in Walvis Bay, and the second concert will be on Thursday, 2 December at the German Lutheran Church in Swakopmund.
