Child drowns

Renewed calls for parents to look after their children

Despite calls from the Police for parents and caretakers to watch over children playing near pools or dams, another drowning of a young child was reported this week.

Nine year old Mauristo Proudly Tjai-Tjai Mau drowned at Uis on Tuesday and plunged the local community into mourning.
It is alleged that whilst playing with his friends, Mauristo accidentally fell into a sewage dam and drowned. The sewage dam is believed to be about 1,5 metres deep. The friends are said to have immediately reported this to their grandmother who in turn informed the police.
According to police reports, the body of the deceased was retrieved at about 20:30 the same day. A team assisted by the Uis Resettlement Office and some members of the community had to pump water out of the dam to recover the body of the child.
The body was taken to Walvis Bay police mortuary for a post mortem examination.
