Coastal U19 players off to National Trials

Thirteen under 19 coastal Cricket players are in Windhoek to participate in phase 1 of the U19 National Trials hosted by Cricket Namibia (CN) today (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday) in Windhoek.

Cricket Namibia CEO, Johan Muller said the vision of CN is to implement a structure that allows equal opportunity, which is fair to all players and transparent to all stakeholders.
Muller said, “Considering the amount and quality of exposure of our school players, our trial structure aims to create more opportunities to participate while not neglecting any player irrespective of geography.”
Muller said, “With that in mind, our main purpose of the upcoming trials is to select the best players for the Namibia U19 team which is going to take part in World Cup qualifiers to be held in Nigeria in September 2021.”
“Five African countries will compete, with the top team will secure a spot in the ICC 14th edition U19 World Cup to be held in West Indies in early 2022” Muller said.
Muller explained that the identification for the initial squad of forty-eight (48) players was done through consultation with selectors and the evaluation of player’s performances during school leagues, National tours in December 2019 and their performance during the National Week in December 2020.
Muller said “The group of forty-eight (48) players will participate on the above weekend where the squad will be reduced to twenty-eight (28). These players will then attend two training weekends and participate in various inter-squad games before the squad will be reduced.”
