The second edition of the Debmarine Senior Regional Netball Championship that was held at the Tamariskia Sports Fields in Swakopmund over the past weekend was a big success.
With only thirteen out of the 14 regions participated with the //Karas failed to show up for unknown reasons after having confirmed their participation. The tournament was used to select a national shadow team to give competition to the current squad.
Namibian National team Netball coach said that he is happy with the potential at the event, but feels that the Regions did not bring their best player.Netball Namibia president Lydia Mutenda said that there is a big improvement from the players playing the game as well as umpiring of the game. This shows that the sport is in the right direction. She also thanked Debmarine for their sponsorship and the Government for availing transport to all the regions.Public Relations Officer of Netball Namibia Connie Samaria echoed that the event was a success and that he applauded this year’s competition for featuring male teams.
Four male netball teams from Zambezi, Otjozondjupa, Omaheke and Khomas regions participated in this year’s Debmarine Namibia Senior Regional Netball Championships.
The under 19 Netball National team that will participate in the Region 5 games in Botswana in December this year used the Debmarine Senior Regional Netball Championship as part of their training. The under nineteen girls won all three games that they played.
The last game was against the Khomas Regional male team was the best game of the event. The potential of the young girls is by fare better than the Regional teams that played at the event.
The Khomas Region retained the Trophy that they won last year at the inaugural event as they beat Omusati Region 34-10 in the final. En route to the final, they defeated Oshana 35-14 in the semi-final, with Omusati beat Otjozondjupa 31-27 in the other semi-final match.
Khomas dominated the tournament, as they won all their games. Otjozondjupa beat Oshana 28-17 in the third and fourth playoff match. Jonitha Kahuure of Erongo was named mid court player of the tournament while Diana George was named both defender and player of the tournament.
