Duinesig choir off to South Africa

Duinesig Combined School from the Kuisebmond Township in Walvis Bay will once again represent Namibia at the Afrikaans Language and Culture Association (ATKV) Applaus choir competition from 24 to 27 July in Bloemfontein South Africa.

The harbour town school choir won Gold at the ATKV Applaus choir competition hosted by the Mascato Youth choir at the Namib Primary School Aula in Swakopmund where they beat school choirs from Swakopmund Secondary School, Otjiwarongo Secondary School and Windhoek High.
Duinesig Combined School won the ATKV applaus choir competition from 2012 to 2015 and in 2015 the school choir was the overall winners of the competition in South Africa. In the years 2016 to 2018 the school choir did not partake in any competition as they were building a winning combination.
The choir conductors are Eupha Lilungwe and Otniel Tjombe with Ms Annalisa Harases as the coordinator.
The Principal on the school Mr Stanley Urikhob said “The school choir is by far the best school choir in the country with the sound they made and their disci-plined attitude”. They will again win the overall price in South Africa he added.
For a school choir to qualify for the ATKV applaus competition in South Africa they need to win gold and ranked according to the allocated performance percentage it obtained.
The judge’s panel consisted of Gisela de Villiers and Theodore Cookson, the conductor of the Mascato Youth Choir.
Gisela de Villiers a Director of the Johannesburg-based music production company Infullvoice and one of the judges with Theodore Cookson, the conductor of the Mascato Youth Choir at the competition in Swakopmund said that competitions of the magnitude provide opportunities for school choirs to improve their repertoire and provide opportunities to improve their repertoire.
The school are in need of fund to participate in South Africa. They are requesting the business community to assist with their travelling cost.
