EBH Welwitchia busts CCD Tigers Champions twice

The past weekend the EBH Welwitschia tackled the CCD Tigers in the Three Ships T20 League. The two teams share quite a history, as they competed twice before during past occasions, primarily on a Saturday afternoon and once on Sunday. The EBH Welwitschias ended up victorious over its opponent on both occasions.

Both games were low scoring with the first game being tightly contested. CCD Tigers won the toss and chose to bat. CCD Tigers got off to a racing start with the score at 50-1 after 6 overs. But some clever captaincy and smart bowling made the EBH Welwitschia’s restrict CCD to 122-7 after 20.
Their National player, Stephen Baard, showing off his class by scoring a well-crafted half century, ending up with 60 from 50 balls. Unfortunately none of the other batsmen could keep pace with the swiftly Stephen. The next best performers were Wian van Vuuren and Lonadre’ Louwrens who ended up with 18 and 17 respectively.
The bowling unit of EBH did well as a team with most of the bowlers going for less 4.5 Runs per over. The stand-out performers were most certainly Zhivago Groenewald who ended up with figures of 15-2 after 4 overs and Petrus Burger who ended up with 3-16 after his 4 overs.
EBH Welwitschia’s came out to bat thinking the game was in the bag, but CCD Tigers and their captain, Stephen Baard, made the going tough by bowling tough lines and not allowing the batsmen any breathing space. Jurgen Linde, played a brilliant anchoring innings of 41 off 43 balls which made the game more immense and held things cooperatively. Most of the EBH batsmen got starts but couldn’t convert them which meant the game was to be decided in the last over.
EBH needed 8 runs of the last over and the ball was entrusted to the experienced Norbert Manyade. Things did not going according to initial intent for Norbert who ended up bowling a few consecutive wides, but he did take a wicket with his 3 ball which created pressure for the incoming Lauritz Haccou, who needed 4 runs of the remainder of the over. Lauritz showed a cool head and calmly deposited the next delivery for 4 runs through point to hand EBH the victory.
The next day made the teams lock horns again. This time EBH’s captain, Christopher Coombe, won the toss and requested to field. CCD decided to change their batting order a bit and it looked to be working with them getting off to another flying start. Justin Baard in particular was doing well and ended up on 39 from 31 balls. The turning point of the innings came when young Matthew de Gouveia was given the ball. From his first ball he was giving the batsmen problems and ended up with brilliant figures of 4-11 from his 4 overs. EBH restricted CCD to 118-9 from their 20 overs.
EBH Welwitschia’s diligently approached there innings with focus and a clear plan stradegy. They lost an early wicket, but from that point they never looked back. Lauritz Haccou blasting a superb 65 from 56 delivery and Mias Strauss holding the innings together with a patient and well-constructed 36 from 41 balls. CCD Tigers could not break their partnership. And EBH went on to win by 9 wickets scoring the winning runs in the 18th over.
