Eighteen-year-old dies in shack fire

The eighteen year old girl who sustained 80 % burn wounds in a shack fire at Otjimbingwe shortly after midnight on Friday sadly has died. Memory “Anana” Garises died hours after being admitted to the Katutura Hospital in Windhoek in a very serious condition. 

According to police reports, Garises was rescued by her neighbours who manage to extinguish the fire. By the time the fire was put out, all of Garises’ belongings were destroyed in the fire.  “It appeared that she was alone in the shack when the fire started”, explained Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, Erongo regional police crime investigations coordinator.
The victim was rushed to the Usakos state hospital and then transported to Windhoek where she died.
The cause of this deadly shack fire is under investigation.
