Elderly Swakopmund man on charge of culpable homicide after killing pedestrian and injuring two others in accident
69 Year-old Swakopmund resident allegedly with his vehicle knocked over two pedestrians and a cyclist on Tuesday evening whilst travelling from DRC towards Mondesa. All three victims were critically injured, but one of the injured, a young woman, passed away shortly after arrival at hospital. The driver has been charged with culpable homicide, drunken driving and reckless and or negligent driving.
According to deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, the pensioner was driving a Nissan Hard-body pick-up (N18611S) at about 18:00 when he allegedly bumped the two pedestrians, Penehupifo Stefanus (19) and Annatolia Wilbard, as well as the cyclist, Mathias Akwenye, who was crossing the road.
All three sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Swakopmund State Hospital.
Stefanus succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival at the hospital while the other victims were admitted in a critical but stable condition. The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, remained unharmed and was arrested at the scene. He is due to make his first court appearance today (26 May).
The next of kin of the deceased person were informed. Police investigations continue.
