Former mayor of Walvis Bay in Zimbabwe as neighbouring country’s new future unfolds
A former mayor of Walvis Bay, Mrs Balbina Pienaar, has been cast in the international news spotlight this week, as the media focuses its attention on neighbouring Zimbabwe where the Zimbabwean military on Tuesday took control of the country and ended President Robert Mugabe’s 37 years of rule.
Mrs. Pienaar is the Namibian Ambassador to Zimbabwe and has been quoted by the Namibian national media this week as constantly updating Namibia’s Ministry of International Relations and Co-operations on the developing situation in Zimbabwe. The Namibian High Commission in Zimbabwe is situated in the capital Harare.
At the time of going to press yesterday afternoon press reports from Harare stated President Robert Mugabe was “imminent” on stepping down and hand over power to the country’s former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Mnangagwa is expected to form a unity Government which will include members of the country’s opposition.
