Giniel and Alonso in Walvis Bay

The Formula 1 legend Fernando Alonso and the South African Dakar champion Giniel de Villers and the Toyota Gazoo Racing team were in Walvis Bay for several days to test their vehicles and hone their Dakar skills.

Catalan motorcycle Dakar champ Marc Coma was the navigator and most likely the chosen one to join Alonso for his very first Dakar from 5 tot 17 January 2020 presented in in Saudi Arabia. Alonso also had de Villiers at his side for training.
In a statement sent Tuesday, the Japanese team confirmed that Alonso “will work closely with Toyota Gazoo Racing and his Dakar Rally team, undergoing an intensive training program.
The Spaniard, two-time champion of the world of Formula 1, has proposed to train at the start of the next edition of the most famous and demanding raid by stages in the world, that between January 5 and 17 will pass through the deserts and tracks of Saudi Arabia, a new game for everyone.
The director of the Toyota team, Glyn Hall, assured Fernando Alonso enjoyed the experience of driving a Hilux, and they could adapt and improve. “Fernando came to the test prepared and absorbed everything we taught him,” he said.
