Hangana invests N$40m in abalone farm at Lüderitz

Walvis Bay based fish company makes its debut in Lüderitz

Hangana Seafood, a leading fish producer in Walvis Bay and the subsidiary of the O&L Group, on Friday saw the official opening of the company’s abalone farm at Lüderitz. The abalone farm comes at an investment of N$40 million, of which N$13 million went into the sales price of an existing abalone production concern.
At full production that will be phased in over the course of the next four years, this mariculture facility would produce 300 metric tons of abalone annually and create 300 Namibian jobs.
Namibia’s Fisheries Minister Bernhard Esau was the guest of honour at the opening where he reminded Namibians that mariculture and aquaculture are the future of fisheries globally. He urged Namibians to invest more in these disciplines and said trends across the globe show the demand for seafood products like abalone is ever increasing.
Growing abalone, the Minister further explained, also assists in lessening the demand for abalone growing naturally. Abalone poaching is a serious concern worldwide that can be negated if abalone production in mariculture systems can be developed to full potential.
