History for Rössing Marathon

History was made last weekend when more than 300 athletes took part in the 30th Rössing Marathon – which was for the first time virtually accessible due to Covid-19.

The organizers initially wanted to invite only a select group of elite athletes to the marathon in Swakopmund, but due to the regulations and the current levels of the Covid-19 pandemic it was not possible. Therefore, this year’s marathon was only open to runners anywhere in Namibia.
Jeremiah Shaliaxwe from Windhoek who participated in his first Rössing marathon won the men’s open in two hours 19 minutes 59 seconds with Alina Armas-Namupala the winner of the women’s open for her sixth Rössing marathon title in a time of two hours 51minutes and 1 seconds.
Both winners will receive N$10,000 in prize money and a development bonus of N $ 20,000 for any sports-related expenses.
The Liaison Head of Rössing Uranium Daylight Ekandjo said that a total of N $ 90 000 will be paid out to the winners in the various categories.
Ekandjo said “We are indeed proud of every athlete who was brave enough to take part and complete the marathon.”
“We remain hopeful that the Rössing marathon will be able to return to normal next year” Ekandjo said.
