Parental neglect is believed to be the cause of the drowning of a 16-months-old baby in Mondesa at Swakopmund on Tuesday morning. The child was left alone with a second toddler of the same age. The child fell into a 25-litres bucket of laundry water and drowned.

The tragic incident happened in Mondesa’s Tulinawa section. It is alleged that the deceased’s mother and her friend left the two babies alone at home to go to a nearby shop. According to the regional crime investigations coordinator of the Namibian Police in Erongo, Deputy Commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, the mothers upon their return heard the one baby crying profusely. The mothers rushed into the home and in a room discovered the baby head down in the bucket of water.
