Junior Pairs 2018

This past weekend once again saw Windhoek Bowling Club host their annual Junior Pairs tournament.
Eligible bowlers are those who are affiliated to the Namibia Bowling Association and who have played the sport for less than five years. Age is not a factor, so a person in their sixties can be classified a junior.
There were seven teams this year and the competition format was a complete round robin. Teams thus played six games in total. This year there were only two bowlers from the Coast, with the other twelve being members of the four Windhoek Clubs. The oldest player in the Tournament was 74 years old, with the youngest being 11, thus proving that bowls is for people of all ages.
Four cash prizes were on offer, totalling N$5000. Sponsorship for the Tournament was obtained from Kleber and Associates, as well as cash donations from the members themselves of Windhoek Bowling Club.
There were many hard-fought games but the competition proved too strong for some teams. The eventual winners were John Hawthorne of Eros Bowling Club (EBC) and Huipie van Wyk of Omeya Bowling Club (OBC). Runners-up were Freddie Fouche (EBC) and Claude Thorburn (OBC). In third place were mother and daughter team, AnnalizeWolfaardt and Elzaan de Vries, who both hail from Namib Park Bowling Club in Walvis Bay. Christo de Beer (EBC) and Ruan Calitz from Transnamib Bowling Club ended in fourth place. Ruan is only 11 years old.
The event was well-supported, with numerous spectators enjoying the great weather and some excellent bowls. Windhoek Bowling Club hopes to host this Tournament for many years to come as its main aim is to allow novice players to play against players of more or less equal strength and thus to develop the sport.
