Luderitz residents welcome manganese business… but

Residents say no to “open top” containers

Lüderitz residents took it to social media in recent days over concerns of trains rolling into the town with large quantities of manganese from South Africa’s Northern Cape. Trade Port has secured the export of manganese through the port of Lüderitz, but residents are not happy with the fact this mining product is transported in open top containers.

They say the dust emanating from manganese is not only a health risk but is also an environmentally unfriendly substance in that it blackens any surface it gets in contact with.
Resident do welcome the export business to the town, but urge both the Environment Ministry and the Namibia Ports Authority (Namport) to take the exporter to task for a safer transport mode – like covered or closed containers.
