Manhunt on for two after Swakopmund resident who was shot during burglary dies

A manhunt is on for two burglars who allegedly shot a 29-year old Swakopmund resident in the head last week after a house burglary in Mondesa. The man was a resident at the home where the burglary occurred and he died of the gunshot injury on Thursday. The deceased, Mr. Nghipulwa Matheus Kahwadi, celebrated his 29th birthday ten days before the incident.
According to deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations co-ordinator for Erongo, the incident took place early in the morning hours on the above-mentioned date. “It is alleged that at about 03:00 at house no. 1959 one suspect entered the flat through an open window and stole one laptop, a Samsung Note 4 cellphone and a Samsung Duos cellphone whilst the victim and his girlfriend were sleeping,” Iikuyu said.
While the burglar was busy leaving the flat through the same window, the victim, Kahwadi woke up and grabbed the suspect. A struggle ensued. The second suspect, who was waiting outside the flat, shot the victim in the right side of the head. The calibre of the weapon is not known. Both suspects fled the scene on foot. The value of the stolen items is estimated at N$21 000-00.
The victim was rushed to the Swakopmund State Hospital and was then transferred to the Katutura State Hospital. His condition was serious and unstable and he was unconscious. Kahwadi passed away on 1 June at about 20:50 at the Katutura State Hospital. The case was therefore changed from attempted murder to murder.
“No suspect has been arrested yet. The police are looking for public assistance in this matter,” Iikuyu said. Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects should contact the nearest police station. The Mondesa Police Station emergency numbers are: 081 640 7606 and 064-415 007.
