“Our darkest hour is yet to come”

Approximately sixty two people lost their lives to Covid-19 in the Erongo Region since mid-June. Over the same period, a total of 2 904 people in Erongo tested positive for the Coronavirus.

These grim figures were released on Wednesday by Namibia’s Head of State Dr. Hage Geingob during a televised address to the nation.
Dr. Geingob said Namibia finds itself in an unprecedented state of disaster with more than 20 000 active Covid-19 cases, and a death rate that surpassed 1 500 people.
To make matters worse, Namibia also ran out of adequate Covid-19 vaccines, crucial if the nation is to reach herd immunity against Covid-19.
According to the Head of State Namibia the situation will become worse before the country reaches a turning point in the wave of infections and deaths. Estimates are that Namibia could reach that crucial turning some time next month.
Describing it as “the darkest hour of the night arrives just before daybreak”, the Head of State called upon every Namibian to do his or her part to break the Covid-19 onslaught.
That must be interpreted that every Namibian and visitor to the country has the responsibility to wear face masks (correctly); regularly sanitise their hands, avoid crowded places, practise social distancing and make use of opportunities to get vaccinated.
Equally all are called upon to adhere to the health regulations that came into force at one minute to midnight on Wednesday and which will stay in force until the same time on 15 June.
