Police in riot gear restores calm at Swakop police cells

Members of the Namibian Police’s Special Field Force had to use an extend of force at the Swakopmund police station late on Wednesday, to bring a police cell uprising under control.

Trial awaiting prisoners allegedly refused to cooperate with a request to act orderly. Instead they allegedly threw police officers with water, refused to go back into the cells, and were armed with sticks to assault officers.
The Field Force was deployed and after again refusing to cooperate, police officers in riot gear entered the cell blocks and restored calm.
Pictures emerged afterwards of injuries sustained by the prisoners, but at the time of going to press the authenticity of the pictures could not be confirmed.
