Security company co-owner shots son, himself
The community of Swakopmund is reeling in shock as the co-owner of Ombala Security Companry, 43 year-old William John Basson, committed suicide in the early hours on Friday morning. Basson allegedly shot his son four times before turning the gun onto himself – his son is in hospital in a serious condition.
The cause of the tragic suicide is not yet known. According to Detective inspector Erastus Iikuyu, acting regional crime investigations coordinator, the incident occurred on Friday at about 12:45 at the deceased’s residence in the Swakopmund suburb Mondesa. Basson shot his 19 year-old son four times with the company’s revolver – in the shoulder, arms and thigh. “He turned the gun on himself and shot himself through the head,” Iikuyu said; and continued: “He died instantly on the spot.”
His son was admitted to Cottage Hospital.
The incident occurred in the garage of the deceased’s home. “No suicide note was left,” Iikuyu said.
