South African dies after accident in dunes

A 56 year-old South African citizen passed away on Saturday in the dunes after the vehicle he was driving in overturned. The deceased was identified as Wilco Moll.

According to Detective Inspector Erastus Iikuyu, Acting Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator for Erongo, Moll was driving in the dunes with a Toyota Land Cruiser in the vicinity of Long Beach. “There was only one passenger, Mr. Johannes Farrell (24), also a South African citizen on holiday at Henties Bay,” Iikuyu reported.
It is alleged that whilst driving in the dunes Moll lost control over the vehicle after which it overturned. The deceased was flung out of the vehicle. The car landed on top of him. “He died on the spot,” Iikuyu continued. The passenger sustained minor injuries.
The next of kin of the deceased person were informed. The police is investigating the case of culpable homicide.
Meanwhile, motorists, quad bike and bike riders are cautioned after this first death of the festive season. Road safety is a paramount issue during the festive season, as there are many more road users than off season periods. Speeding, drunken driving, dangerous driving and disregard for road signs and other road users increases chances of accidents. Those enjoying offroad driving are urged to exercise caution, especially when a person is not familiar with the terrain or does not have the necessary experience to operate these vehicles.
