There were wild celebrations after Sparta Rugby Club from Walvis Bay claimed the Namibia Rugby Union First League on Saturday, 23 October, at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek.

Sparta overcame their nerves as they defeated rivals UNAM III 32-52 in the final of the first league. At full time the scores were level at 19-19 and it extra time Sparta went over for a converted try and a successful penalty kick to separate the teams at the end of extra time.
Sparta Rugby Clubs coach, Frans Beukes, said that this is all about hard work and commitment by the players.
“A a Rugby Club, we are very happy and proud of how far we have come as a team, given the challenges we had. From here, we just want to see growth and would like to participate in the Reserve League, but the league composition I believe will not allow it,” Beukes said.
Beukes invited prospective young rugby players to join the club, “as Sparta Rugby is well managed and we try to put the player’s interests first. We believe in hard work being rewarded and striving for justice, equality and trust among ourselves.
“I would like to thank the players and my fellow coaching staff for a job well done,” Beukes said.
The try scores for Sparta were Jennery Xamseb, Zwandre Viviers, Shaun White, Darren Esterhuizen and Curyn Blizzard with Giovanni Isaacs successful with two conversions and one penalty. Zwandre Viviers also won the man of the match award.
