Swakopmund Municipality’s Project Shine launched

The Swakopmund Municipality launched its Project Shine for the year 2021/2022 last week Friday, the project aims at promoting cleanliness, recycling, and contributing to the social upliftment within the Swakopmund community.
Project Shine has been successfully managed since it was first launched in 2007 on World Environmental Day. To-day the project has been running for more than 10 years. The project comprises of two environmental activities, namely a clean-up campaign and an awareness campaign.
The clean-up campaign was aimed at cleaning the main road from Swakopmund to Arandis of litter, but has since been extended to the beaches, the Swakop River mouth and open spaces within Swakopmund.
Sixteen groups were selected from non-profit organisations, churches, sports clubs etc that applied.
A designated ward will be allocated to each participating group which has to be cleaned and maintained during the six-month period.
The sixteen selected groups are as follows: The Apostolic Faith Mission of Namibia, Karondjenda Group, Blue Boys FC, Jozikee Mukuru Healing Star Church, Soli Deo Gloria, Rhenish Church Swakopmund: Sunday School, Africa Development Foundation, MSR (Men on the Side of the Road), Desert United Football Academy, Coastal Warriors Volleyball Club, Ebenezer Pentecostal Church, Oruuano Protestant Unity Church, King Jesus, Reign Ministries, Christ Victory Ministry of all Nation, Solafide Choir and Flippers Swimming Club.
Performance evaluations will be done on a monthly basis by appointed evaluators to determine the cleanliness of the ward before monthly donations are paid out to the respective organisations over a period of six months.
Apart from the monthly cash donations, there will be cash prizes (first, second and third) that will be awarded to the groups with the cleanest areas. The evaluation team will consist of representatives from the Municipality of Swakopmund, Rössing Uranium Limited and Namibia Breweries.
According to the Spokesperson of the Swakopmund Municipality Ailie Gebhardt, all participating organisations must submit a monthly activity report on waste removed which will be used as a tool by the evaluators during the monthly inspections.
Gebhardt said, with the renowned support from Rössing Uranium Limited (main sponsor), Namibia Breweries Ltd, Bannerman Resources Namibia, the Municipality of Swakopmund, First National Bank (First Rand Namibia Foundation) and Plastic Packaging Namibia, the project has grown to a remarkable environmental activity which has been praised by the community of Swakopmund and visitors to the town.
Rössing Uranium Limited (main sponsor) sponsored N$100 000, an evaluator and a 4×4 bakkie for evaluations, Namibia Breweries Ltd sponsored N$80 000 and an evaluator, Bannerman Resources Namibia who sponsored N$7 500, the Municipality of Swakopmund sponsored N$20 000, First National Bank (First Rand Namibia Foundation) sponsored N$10 000 and Plastic Packaging Namibia sponsored plastic bags, all amounting to N$217 500.
