Swakopmund turns125 in August

Swakopmund will turn 125 years old on 4 August 2017 – a special event to celebrate this occasion is planned from 4 until 6 August. Town Council at its recent meeting decided that a local organising committee be established to make the celebration a success.

“This year Swakopmund is celebrating its 125th birthday and that shows that the inhabitants have built a strong foundation which is being improved regularly,” it reads in the Agenda of the recent meeting. “The aim of celebrating this event is to enrich the cultural diversity and social life of the town.”
During Swakopmund’s 120th birthday celebration under the theme “From Swakopmunders for Swakopmunders” various activities were prepared, many of which were a big success: a fun fair festival, choirs, cultural performances, music concerts, stalls and an interdenominal church service. Additionally there was an art as well as an essay writing competition.
“Swakopmund is rich in history and culture. This is something to be celebrated throughout the town and a wonderful opportunity for the Swakopmunders to come together,” it reads. Town Council therefore decided to host the birthday on the above mentioned dates and establish a local organising committee in charge of the preparation. The community of Swakopmund should also be invited to participate or give input on how the occasion should be celebrated.
Council further decided to make budgetary provisions in the new financial year, while funding should also be sourced from the private sector. Council will also consider to use the funds budgeted towards the 2017 Namibia Music Awards for this event since the awards will now be held in Walvis Bay.
