Three local golfers beat Gary Player

Three Walvis Bay residents could boast in 1975 that they won Gary Player in a golf competition. These three players are Willie Prosser (Sr), Clive Crockett and L.S. Geyer, all three members of the Walvis Bay Golf Club.

In December 1974 Gary Player challenged anyone to take him on in a single-Stableford match in aid of the Southern Cross Fund. A well-known Insurance Company hosted the competition.
More than 8000 golfers accepted the challenge and of those 85, succeeded in beating Player. The three mentioned Walvis Bay golfers were winners as well as a certain Mrs. A. Hugo of Okahandja and a Mr. J.G. Coetzee of Gobabis.
