Two baby boys die at the hands of their own mothers

Two baby boys died at the coast in the past few days, at the hands of their own mothers.

In the first incident last Thursday, a 40-year old mother placed her newborn baby boy in a plastic bag and placed him in a dustbin at Walvis Bay. The mother later admitted to staff at the Walvis Bay State Hospital what she had done. It was too late for the infant. The boy had already died.
In a second incident on Friday, a 28-year old woman has been arrested on a charge of child neglect after she allegedly locked her eight months old baby in her shack and left the child unattended for an entire day, resulting in the death of the baby boy.
According to deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu, police regional crime investigations coordinator for Erongo, the incident occurred at a shack located in Omuramba Street in the DRC-suburb in Swakopmund. It is alleged that the suspect, Martha Nangombe, left her baby Nabot Shigwedha, born on 30 October 2016, alone in the shack. She left for work at about 7:30 in the morning.
“She then placed the key where the others couldn’t find it and left for work without informing anyone to take care of the child,” Iikuyu said.
“It is further alleged that at about 17:00, more than nine hours later, the suspect’s sister and her friend went to the ghetto and found the baby hanging from the bed on the jersey he was wearing,” Iikuyu continued. The baby was dead.
Post-mortems will be conducted to determine the cause of death of the infants.
