Two dead in Erongo accidents

Two people passed away in two separate road accidents in less than a week in the Erongo Region. The police has in the meantime revealed the name of the tourist, who passed away on the A2 highway whilst travelling towards Swakopmund on 25 February.

The most recent road death in the Erongo region occurred on Wednesday this week, when two persons were travelling from Tubusis to Swakopmund. According to Deputy Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa from Nampol the driver of the Nissan hard body lost control over the vehicle at about 18:00 about 30 kilometres from Usakos. The vehicle left the road and overturned. The driver, identified as Theodore Ignatius Junias (36), died on the spot, while the passenger did not sustain any injuries. The next of kin were informed. The police is investigating a case of culpable homicide.
In the meantime Kashuupulwa released more details regarding the tragic accident that claimed the life of a Chinese tourist on 25 February. According to initial reports four Chinese nationals were travelling in a Land Rover (registration ff16 nmgp) towards Swakopmund. About 50 kilometres from Usakos the driver lost control over the vehicle and the vehicle overturned and came to a standstill on the road. Three of the occupants were females who were travelling with one male. One of the women was the driver. The male passenger as well as the driver were seriously injured. They were then transported to Usakos State Hospital, but the man, identified as Zhao Peng (34), died shortly after his arrival at the hospital.
The other two female passengers escaped unhurt. The tourists were visiting Namibia from South Africa and were travelling in a convoy consisting of four vehicles. It is not yet known if they are staying in South Africa or if they were just visiting Namibia.
More people were injured during an accident that took place on the road between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund in the vicinity of Langstrand this week. According to the West Coast Safety Initiative a sedan (taxi) with three occupants left the road and crashed through the cable fence after the driver lost control. He experienced an apparent tyre failure. The vehicle went down the embankment and overturned resulting in the passengers, a mother and a child, sustaining serious and less serious injuries respectively while the driver sustained minor injuries only. All occupants were transported to the Walvis Bay State Hospital.
