Walvis Bay resident charged for murder after deadly bar brawl
The 26-year-old, Sylvester Duiker, a Walvis Bay resident accused of causing the death of Sebulon Handjamba (25) during a brawl outside a local club in the harbour town in the early hours of Sunday 12 November this year was granted bail. He appeared in the Walvis Bay magistrates court for his bail application.
The incident lead to huge discontent among Walvis Bay residents who argue the Namibian Police was selective in who they arrested for the alleged murder. The brawl reportedly broke out between two groups at Shanghai night club whereby people allegedly struck each other with clenched fists and instruments which included a vehicle jack and a hammer.
During the physical altercation four people sustained moderate to serious head injuries and were taken to Walvis Bay state hospital for medical treatment. Handjamba passed away a few hours later and the police investigates now whether the death can be linked to injuries the deceased sustained as a result of the brawl. Duiker stands accused of having delivered the deadly blow by hitting Handjamba over the head with the vehicle jack. Duiker, who was also one of the injured admitted to hospital, was arrested after his discharge from hospital and made his first appearance on a charge of murder in the Walvis Bay Magistrates court on Tuesday. Duiker’s bail was granted at N$10 000. His next appearance will be in February 2018.
