Rössing Uranium has officially launched its 50th anniversary commemorative logo, signalling the start of celebrations marking a major milestone for Namibia’s longest operating uranium mine.
The unveiling, held on 7 April 2026, represents more than just a new symbol. It reflects five decades of resilience, innovation and contribution to Namibia’s mining sector, economy and communities. Speaking at the announcement, Managing Director Johan Coetzee highlighted the mine’s far-reaching impact over the years. “Over the past five decades, Rössing has evolved and embraced innovation, strengthened its safety culture, and deepened its commitment to responsible and sustainable mining. This achievement is the result of the dedication of generations of employees, the support of our partners, and the trust of the communities in which we operate,” he said. He added that the full impact of Rössing’s legacy is difficult to quantify, noting that the ripple effects on people and communities across Namibia are significant. As part of the anniversary celebrations, the company will release a documentary on its official birthday, 26 June, offering a comprehensive look at Rössing’s journey and its contribution across generations.
The date marks the beginning of operations in 1976—an event widely regarded as the birth of one of Namibia’s most important mining legacies. A series of events for employees and stakeholders is also planned. The history of uranium in Namibia dates back to 1928, when it was first discovered in the Namib Desert.
However, it was only after extensive exploration in the late 1950s that real interest developed. In 1966, Rio Tinto secured the rights to the Rössing deposit, leading to the establishment of Namibia’s first commercial uranium mine a decade later. A new chapter for the mine began in 2019 when China National Uranium Corporation Limited (CNUC) acquired a majority stake from Rio Tinto. As a subsidiary of China National Nuclear Corporation, CNUC brings extensive experience in uranium exploration, mining and processing, both domestically and internationally.
This transition has positioned Rössing Uranium for a renewed phase of growth and sustainability, with the potential to extend its life beyond current projections. The development is also seen as a positive step for the Erongo Region and Namibia’s broader mining industry. Over the past 50 years, Rössing Uranium has played a key role in shaping Namibia’s mining landscape. With the unveiling of its commemorative logo, the company not only celebrates its past but also signals its intent to continue contributing to the country’s development well into the future.
