The Honourable Governor of the Erongo Region, Nathalia /Goagoses, convened an urgent stakeholders engagement this morning at the Erongo Regional Council Chambers in Swakopmund with members of the Erongo Road Safety Forum, following a series of road accidents, including the recent crash that claimed eight lives about 10km outside Arandis.
During the meeting, the Governor together with forum members extended condolences to the bereaved families and stressed the need for immediate action to reduce the loss of lives on the region’s roads.
The Governor called for stronger law enforcement, better road conditions and improved coordination among stakeholders. Issues raised included reckless driving, driver fatigue, increasing traffic volumes especially heavy trucks, unlicensed drivers, narrow and deteriorating roads, and delays in emergency response.
The forum discussed solutions and agreed on a way forward. Proposals included exploring increased transportation of goods by railway to reduce pressure on roads and strengthening road safety awareness campaigns across the region.
The Governor directed that urgent measures be implemented and announced plans to convene a broader Road Safety Indaba in the coming weeks to bring together key stakeholders and strengthen efforts to improve road safety.
