Shotokan Karate Academy, JSKA Namibia recently held the National Gasshuku at the MTC Dome in Swakopmund, a day dedicated to intensive training, technical development and unity in traditional Shotokan karate.

The event brought together 134 karate students from Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, Omaruru, Windhoek and Grootfontein, creating an opportunity for karateka of all ages and belt levels to train together in a challenging and supportive environment. Unlike regular training sessions, a traditional Gasshuku is designed to push participants beyond their comfort zones by exposing them to new training partners, techniques and learning experiences.

This year’s camp also placed a strong emphasis on teamwork while combining disciplined instruction with engaging activities. Participants rotated through six specialised training stations, focusing on karate-specific conditioning, kihon (basic techniques), master class kata, balance drills, punching bag power and distance training, and grappling and throwing techniques. The demanding programme tested both the physical endurance and technical ability of the athletes, encouraging them to develop resilience while refining their skills throughout several hours of continuous training.

Chief Instructor and Style Head of Shotokan Karate Academy – JSKA Namibia, Valdemar Swart hailed the event as a success, with the strong turnout reflecting the continued growth and commitment of JSKA Namibia. The national Gasshuku also reinforced the organisation’s values of discipline, respect, physical fitness and community. Swart, praised the dedication shown by the participants, saying the event demonstrated the passion and determination of karate practitioners from across the country as they continue to raise the standard of traditional Shotokan karate in Namibia.
