Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) has reaffirmed its commitment to Namibian Netball, renewing its sponsorship of the national league to the tune of N$3.4 million per year. to support player development and league growth.
The announcement was made during the league’s crowning event, where the season’s champions were celebrated, with MTC stressing that its involvement goes far beyond placing its name on the competition or its logo on players’ jerseys.
According to Erasmus Nekundi of MTC, the company’s continued investment is driven by confidence in the direction of Namibian netball and the progress being made towards professionalising the domestic league. “For us, we see the value, impact, and the good direction where the league is headed.
The aim is to professionalize the league and we urge that we commit towards achieving that goal.” Nekundi said. The renewed sponsorship also brings direct benefits for players, with the increased funding allowing for improved player remuneration.
Players are now reportedly receiving N$1,200, an increase aimed at improving their welfare while strengthening the foundations of the league. Nekundi said MTC’s commitment is based on a belief in Namibian talent and the wider impact of sport. The company believes netball helps develop discipline, teamwork and sporting excellence while contributing to stronger communities and, ultimately, a stronger nation. MTC also commended the leadership of Netball Namibia for its continued efforts to grow the league and raise its competitive standard.
“Your vision, your dedication is truly appreciated, and we believe that together we are definitely going to achieve the status where we will be called a professionalised league,” Nekundi said.
The call for professionalisation comes at an important time for Namibian netball, as stakeholders seek better player welfare, stronger structures and a more sustainable pathway for talented athletes.
MTC further thanked all teams that participated during the season, praising their sportsmanship, patience and the quality of netball they brought to the court. “To every team that has competed this season, thank you for your patience, thank you for your sportsmanship, and thank you for the world-class netball that you brought to the court,” Nekundi said.
He concluded by congratulating the season’s champions, saying their achievement was well deserved.
