The Namib Desert turned into a battlefield of endurance this weekend as runners from across Namibia descended on the Heineken 0.0 & Radio Electronic Gonikontes Run, hosted by Teamflippy Sports Events CC, taking on distances ranging from the short 2.5km sprint to the gruelling 21.1km half marathon.
With heat, gravel roads and brutal terrain put Namibia’s endurance athletes to the ultimate test in unforgiving desert terrain standing between the athletes and the finish line, every kilometre demanded determination.
When the dust settled, Eliander Nepembe emerged as the king of the desert, winning the 21.1km half marathon in an impressive 1:21:59. Nepembe finished well ahead of Paulus Abraham, who crossed the line second in 1:32:11, while Stephen James claimed third in 1:36:24.
The 15km race produced another strong performance, with Gerhard Snyders taking victory in 1:14:57. Anna-Mart Kruger finished second in 1:21:02, with Jeanne Heunis recording the same time to secure third.
In the 10km, Jarred Jackson stormed to victory in 42:15, followed by Lisias Ndjene in 43:14 and Lysias Haikonda in 47:13. Martin Compion claimed the 5km title in 25:54, with Pieter Lensing second in 28:15 and Xavier Mouton third in 32:37.
The 2.5km race saw Moses Muningrua lead the field home in 12:35. Alan Heydenrych followed in 13:07, while Albertus Kamaturiri finished third in 13:27.
The Gonikontes spirit extended beyond the desert itself through the TeamFlippy Virtual Goanikontes Run, held under the theme “Run Your Way”. Runners from different towns tackled their own routes while remaining part of the wider TeamFlippy community.
In the virtual 10km category, Munyiaradzi Maposa delivered the standout performance, covering 10.47km in 57:10, averaging 5:28 per kilometre.
The virtual half marathon was led by Elphins Sobozi Maloboka, who completed 21.13km in 1:58:13, followed by Christine Haupt in 2:14:41 and Boris Isaacks in 2:16:00.
Nicoline van Zyl led the listed virtual 15km performances with 15.02km in 1:50:34, while Jan Nicolaas Naude recorded a strong 5.36km effort in 30:14.
