Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, Dr Sanet L. Steenkamp, has described Namibia’s participation at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as a valuable opportunity that has strengthened international partnerships, promoted knowledge exchange and reinforced support for the country’s athletes.
Speaking after a series of engagements in Scotland, Steenkamp said the visit had been marked by productive networking, meaningful discussions and the establishment of lasting relationships that would benefit Namibia beyond the sporting arena.
A key highlight of the trip was the Commonwealth Ministers’ Meeting, attended by representatives from 74 member states, small island nations and territories. The meeting focused on shaping the future of the Commonwealth Games, including confirmation that the next edition will be hosted in India, while also addressing a range of issues related to sport, youth development and international cooperation. Steenkamp also praised the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, describing it as a spectacular celebration of unity, diversity and sporting excellence that brought together athletes from across the Commonwealth.
Beyond the Games, the Namibian delegation visited the City of Glasgow College, where discussions centred on maritime education and training. The visit also explored opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Namibia and Scotland in education, innovation, skills development and other strategic sectors. The minister said the engagements demonstrated that the Commonwealth Games extend far beyond athletic competition, creating opportunities for governments to exchange ideas, build partnerships and identify areas of mutual development.
During her visit, Dr Steenkamp also spent time with Team Namibia, meeting athletes and officials competing in boxing, swimming, gymnastics, bowls and athletics. She commended the team’s dedication, discipline and commitment as they represent the country on one of the world’s biggest multi-sport stages.
She encouraged all Namibians to rally behind the national team throughout the remainder of the Games, saying the athletes carry the hopes and pride of the nation with every performance. “Their commitment and determination deserve the unwavering support of every Namibian,” Dr Steenkamp said, adding that the experience in Glasgow has reinforced the importance of investing in sport, education and youth development while building stronger international partnerships for the future.
