The Erongo Regional Council has been recognised among Namibia’s top three performing public institutions in the implementation of the Customer Service Charter, recording an overall performance score of 85.97 per cent.

Erongo Regional Council Chairperson Lazarus Kanelombe announced the achievement during the Council’s 369th Ordinary Regional Council Meeting on Monday. The Council recorded an audit compliance score of 74 per cent, while a detailed compliance assessment resulted in an overall performance score of 85.97 per cent, earning it an Award for Excellence in the Implementation of the Customer Service Charter.

Kanelombe said the recognition reflected the dedication and professionalism of Council staff in delivering services to residents across the region. The award was announced during the 2026 Africa Public Service Day celebrations, which were hosted in Swakopmund under the theme, “Enhancing Public Sector Institutions and Empowering Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships to Achieve Universal Water Availability and Safe Sanitation by 2063.” Meanwhile, the Council continues to advocate for improved infrastructure in the region. Kanelombe said the Omaruru-Uis Road had been prioritised for implementation following engagements with the Ministry of Works and Transport. “We welcome the indication that the Omaruru-Uis Road has been prioritised for implementation and look forward to its commencement,” he said.

The Council also reported progress in youth development, entrepreneurship, agriculture and education. Sixteen students received financial assistance through the Erongo Regional Council Student Support Programme, with priority given to vulnerable students pursuing critical fields such as medicine and other scarce professions. Economic empowerment initiatives were also conducted in Uis, Omatjete, Okombahe and Arandis, where communities and aspiring entrepreneurs received information on Government support programmes, business registration, mining opportunities and available financial assistance. However, Kanelombe acknowledged that the region continues to face challenges, including infrastructure backlogs, unemployment, climate-related risks, pressure on public resources and growing demand for improved public services.

The region also experienced significant wildfires in parts of the Dâures and Karibib constituencies during the reporting period. Kanelombe commended emergency responders, volunteer firefighters, farmers, traditional authorities and other stakeholders for their efforts in containing the fires. He urged residents, farmers, tourists and road users to exercise caution during the fire season and to report fire outbreaks without delay. Kanelombe said the Council remained committed to building an inclusive, resilient and economically vibrant Erongo Region. “Together, we will continue building an Erongo Region that creates opportunities for all, promotes inclusive economic growth and improves the quality of life of every resident,” he said.
