Athletes from across Namibia are gearing up for the Karibib Open Athletics Meet, set to take place on 8 August 2026, with organisers promising a professionally run competition featuring attractive prize money for senior, junior and para-athletes.
Hosted by the Karibib Athletics Club, the annual championship aims to provide a platform for athletes of all ages and abilities to compete while promoting the development of athletics in the Erongo Region and beyond.
Held under the theme “Come. Compete. Achieve. Inspire.”, the event is expected to attract some of Namibia’s leading track and field competitors, alongside emerging talent eager to test themselves against the country’s best.
The competition caters for athletes from grassroots to senior level. Children in the Under-5, Under-6, Under-7, Under-9 and Under-11 age groups will compete for medals, with an entry fee of N$100. Athletes in the Under-13, Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19 divisions will also pay N$100 and will compete for both medals and cash prizes.
Senior athletes and para-athletes will pay an entry fee of N$150, with prize money and medals on offer. Organisers have announced an attractive prize structure for this year’s championship. In the senior men’s and women’s categories, the winners will each receive N$2 500, while second place earns N$2 000, third N$1 750, fourth N$1 250, and fifth N$1 000.
Senior para-athletes will also compete for substantial rewards, with the top three male and female finishers receiving N$2 000, N$1 500 and N$1 000, respectively. In the junior divisions, the top five boys and girls in the Under-13, Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19 categories will receive cash prizes. Winners will earn N$300, runners-up N$200, third place N$150, fourth N$100 and fifth N$50.
According to the organisers, the prize incentives are designed to encourage greater participation while recognising excellence across all levels of competition. Beyond the medals and prize money, the Karibib Athletics Club believes the meet will play an important role in identifying future stars and strengthening athletics development throughout Namibia.
The event promises a safe, inclusive and family-friendly atmosphere, with spectators encouraged to attend and support the athletes throughout the day’s competition.
