Kudus Rugby Club’s Heritage Saturday was about far more than rugby, with the event serving as a celebration of the schools and communities that have shaped the club’s players.

Speaking after the occasion, FNB Kudu head coach Cameron Langenhoven explained that the initiative was designed to remind players to remain grounded and never forget where their rugby journeys began. “Heritage Saturday was basically about acknowledging the schools and the backgrounds where our players come from,” he said.

As part of the celebration, players took to the field wearing the socks of their former schools instead of the club’s traditional kit, creating a colourful tribute to the institutions that helped develop their talents, Langenhoven added. “It was just basically a reminder of your roots, staying humble and knowing where you come from,” the coach added.

He said that the symbolic gesture was well received by players and supporters, highlighting the important role schools play in nurturing young athletes before they progress to senior club rugby.

Heritage Saturday has become a special fixture on the Kudus calendar, strengthening the bond between the club and the local schools that continue to supply talented players to its ranks. The initiative also reinforces the values of humility, gratitude and community, reminding current players that every sporting journey begins with the guidance of coaches, teachers and teammates at grassroots level.

By celebrating those foundations, Kudus not only honoured its own history but also inspired the next generation of rugby players to take pride in their origins while striving for success on the field.
