MTC has expanded its 5G network to Grootfontein, Mariental, Okahandja, Otjiwarongo and Tsumeb, as the telecommunications company accelerates its nationwide network expansion.
The latest rollout forms part of the second phase of MTC’s 5G deployment, which includes 19 new sites across nine regions to increase coverage and accommodate growing network traffic. Erongo is receiving the largest share, with eight new sites, followed by four in Kavango West and one each in //Kharas, Kavango East, Khomas, Kunene, Ohangwena, Oshikoto and Otjozondjupa.
The programme also strengthens existing 5G coverage in Windhoek and Walvis Bay. MTC General Manager: Networks, Ludwig Heinrich Tjitandi, said the investment is aimed at providing reliable, high-quality connectivity while preparing the country for future demand. “Our network investment is ultimately about ensuring that Namibians have access to reliable, high-quality connectivity as demand continues to grow,” he said.
MTC launched Namibia’s first public 5G trial in 2024 in partnership with Huawei, recording speeds of about 1.4 Gbps. Commercial 5G followed in 2025, with the first phase covering 40 sites in major centres including Windhoek, Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Oshakati, Ondangwa, Ongwediva, Rundu, Keetmanshoop, Lüderitz, Oranjemund and Karibib.
The company is also upgrading its broader network. During 2026, MTC carried out 4G/LTE capacity upgrades at 20 sites and replaced ageing equipment at another 25 sites.
Connectivity in underserved areas is also being targeted. MTC received N$32.3 million under Phase 2 of the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia’s Universal Service Fund for nine network solutions comprising 10 towers across //Kharas, Kavango West, Kunene, Ohangwena and Oshikoto.
A further eight existing towers are being replaced, mainly in Erongo, with additional replacements in Khomas, Omusati and Zambezi.
MTC said the investments form part of its broader effort to expand and modernise Namibia’s telecommunications infrastructure and support the country’s digital transformation.
