Namib Times can confirm that the cause of the tragic death of Mr Pieter Albertus Dick (63) at Walvis Bay last month was not a suicide.
Earlier media reports indicated that the Walvis Bay police were investigating a possible suicide case. However, the daughter of the deceased, Elgrane Bock this week presented Namib Times with the official medical certificate for cause of death. The report indicates that the immediate cause of death was cerebellar haemorrhage (a form of stroke). According to Elgrane her father was discharged from hospital a few days prior to the incident as he was not well. She further noted that as a result of his medical condition he did suffer prior fainting episodes.
This was also confirmed in the postmortem report, where it is stated that he suffered the fatal stroke due to critical hypertension (high-blood pressure) and late effects of other nontraumatic intracranial haemorrhage. Elgrane further stated that an eyewitness observed her late father not looking well as he went outside to the balcony to get some fresh air before the tragic incident.
The grieving family noted that it was with heavy hearts and mixed feelings they laid Mr Dick to rest last weekend, as the unfounded claim of a possible suicide clouded his death. “We herewith want to set the record straight, he did not commit suicide,” the family concluded.
The late Mr Dick fell from the second floor of an apartment block in the harbour town’s Lagoon area on Wednesday 28 January 2026 at about 08:49, after suffering a fatal stroke.
