Several national and age-group records were shattered as the Bank Windhoek/Namibia Aquatic Sports Federation (NASFED) Short Course Gala 3 concluded recently across Swakopmund, Windhoek and Oranjemund.

Hosted by NASFED, the third short course gala of the season attracted record entries across all age groups, with the competition extending over two full days due to the large number of participants. The strong turnout highlighted the continued growth of competitive swimming in Namibia and the increasing interest among young athletes.

The standout performance came from Madison Bergh of Marlins Aquatic Club (MAC), who set a new national women’s 1 500m freestyle record in a time of 17:46.64. Her achievement also established a new age-group record in the girls’ 17-18 category.

Dolphins Swimming Club (DOL) swimmers also produced outstanding performances. Patrick Durand broke the boys’ 12-and-under 1 500m freestyle record with a time of 18:13.50, while teammate Oelof Badenhorst set a new boys’ 12-and-under 200m breaststroke record of 2:47.16.

Beyond the record-breaking swims, the gala welcomed dozens of first-time competitors, providing an encouraging glimpse into the future of Namibian swimming. Their participation reflected the sport’s expanding grassroots development and growing popularity across the country.

Swimmers representing Dolphins, Aqua, Marlins, Infinity, Flippers, Swakopmund and Oranjemund Sand Sharks competed across the various age groups, showcasing strong performances throughout the two-day event. NASFED described the gala as both a test of endurance and a celebration of the sport’s continued development.

The federation said the new records, emergence of promising young talent and increased participation demonstrate the positive trajectory of swimming in Namibia.

NASFED also acknowledged the continued support of title sponsor Bank Windhoek, saying the partnership plays an important role in creating opportunities for young swimmers to develop and compete at a high level.
