Rössing Uranium has strengthened technical skills development in Namibia with the donation of a Laser Alignment tool valued at approximately N$130 000 to the Namibia Institution of Mining and Technology (NIMT).
The precision instrument will be used to train fitter and turner apprentices, equipping them with modern skills required in the mining and industrial sectors. The tool was officially handed over as part of the company’s continued support for technical education and skills development in the country. Speaking during the handover ceremony, Rössing Uranium’s manager for mining asset management, Chris Tueutjiua, said the donation reflects the rapid technological advancements taking place in the industry. “This is a new industrial tool, and with emerging technological advancements, this is where the industry is headed,” he said.
Tueutjiua emphasised the importance of ensuring that apprentices are trained using the same equipment currently used in industry. He noted that artisans entering the workforce should already be familiar with modern tools and technologies, allowing them to transition more easily into professional environments after completing their training. The initiative forms part of Rössing Uranium’s broader commitment to investing in long-term skills development and strengthening partnerships with training institutions in Namibia.
Executive Director of NIMT, Ralph Bussel, welcomed the donation and described it as a valuable contribution to the institution’s training capacity. Bussel said institutions such as NIMT often face financial constraints when it comes to purchasing high-value industrial equipment needed for technical training. “As NIMT, we strive to align our training with what industry expects, but it is sometimes a challenge to purchase tools of this value because of limited funds,” he said. “You have ploughed into what is needed. Industry expects us to be at this level, and with your support, we will get there.”
The donation is expected to enhance practical training for apprentices and ensure that graduates from the institution are better prepared to meet the technical demands of Namibia’s mining and industrial sectors.
