Rössing Uranium recently reinforced its commitment to road safety by donating road studs valued at N$251 000 for installation along the Swakopmund–Arandis road. The B2 route serves as a vital economic lifeline between the coastal towns and plays an especially important role in supporting mining operations across the region.
Namibian Police Inspector, Rudiger Beukes highlighted serious road safety concerns along the Swakopmund–Arandis stretch, a key link for commuters, tourism, mining and industry. He cited heavy fog, poor visibility, speeding and reckless overtaking as major contributors to frequent accidents, particularly along long stretches and in high-risk areas. Beukes called for stronger law enforcement measures, including speed monitoring and increased patrols, as well as improved infrastructure such as enhanced road markings and the installation of road studs to improve visibility, guide drivers and reduce collisions. He stressed that while the road supports economic growth, safety must remain the top priority.
“With the donation of road studs from Rössing Uranium, the road will be more clearly marked, and drivers will be able to see the direction of the road ahead, avoid overtaking at blind spots and remain in the correct lane at all times,” said Beukes. Rössing Uranium General Manager for Asset Management and Projects, Edwin Tjiriange, said the investment demonstrates the mine’s commitment to Namibia. He noted that road safety is a shared responsibility and that the mine remains committed to playing its role. “For the past 50 years, we have relied on this road to transport our employees safely to the mine, as well as goods and services. This reinforces the importance of safe and reliable infrastructure for all communities,” said Tjiriange. Roads Authority Senior Manager for the Roads Technical Training Unit, Roger Ochs, said the Swakopmund–Arandis road is a critical corridor serving not only communities along the route but also the broader economic activity of the Erongo Region. “Rössing Uranium has demonstrated that it is a corporate citizen that understands its responsibility to the communities and infrastructure that surround it,” said Ochs, adding that a contractor has been appointed and installation of the studs will commence immediately. This marks the second donation of its kind by Rössing Uranium, following a similar investment in 2020 for the same road section.
