The Municipality of Swakopmund officially inaugurated the new Mole Cubicles Upgrade Project on Tuesday, marking another milestone in the development of one of the town’s most popular coastal attractions.

Speaking at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Mayor Suamma Kautondokwa described the project as a major investment in the local economy, tourism sector and community development. “The vision is becoming a reality,” Kautondokwa said during her address, referring to the transformation of the Mole recreational area since the official site handover in March 2025. The N$4.8 million project includes the construction of enclosed cubicles aimed at supporting local small and medium enterprises, especially vendors involved in arts and crafts.

The facilities will provide dedicated storage and trading spaces designed to create a more organised and supportive business environment. According to Kautondokwa, the project will help empower local entrepreneurs by increasing their visibility and improving opportunities for income generation. “Through this project we hope to create opportunities for local people and ensure that economic benefits are shared within our community,” she said.

A key feature of the development is the iconic wooden lighthouse tower currently being erected at the Mole. Beyond serving as a visual landmark, the structure will house toilet facilities, a security services room and a sea rescue room to improve safety and convenience for both residents and visitors.
