Walvis Bay International Airport has strengthened its emergency response capabilities with the arrival of a new state-of-the-art aircraft firefighting vehicle.

The Namibia Airports Company (NAC) announced this week that the additional Rosenbauer Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicle will be deployed at the coastal airport as part of ongoing efforts to improve aviation safety and prepare for future growth. According to NAC, the investment is aimed at keeping Walvis Bay International Airport in line with international aviation safety standards while also helping Namibia position itself as a stronger aviation and logistics hub in Southern Africa.

The specialised firefighting vehicle is designed to respond rapidly to aircraft emergencies and will strengthen the airport’s rescue and firefighting operations. NAC says modern emergency equipment is becoming increasingly important as global aviation safety regulations continue to evolve. The new vehicle could also help the airport maintain or even improve its current firefighting category rating, which is important for accommodating larger aircraft and attracting more international airlines.

NAC says improved airport safety infrastructure gives airlines and passengers greater confidence and supports Namibia’s plans to increase international air connections. Walvis Bay International Airport plays a key role in tourism, cargo transport and trade, serving as an important coastal gateway connecting Namibia to international markets.
