The 2026 school year officially opened on Monday, with words of motivation and encouragement delivered to learners at Duinesig High School by Walvis Bay Mayor Cllr Johannes Shimbilinga and Chairperson of the Management Committee Cllr Ephraim Shozi.
Addressing a large gathering of learners, Cllr Shozi, a proud alumnus of Duinesig High School, urged learners to approach the year with focus and determination. He reminded them that the festive season was over, adding that learners had now entered what he described as a “Happy New, Hard-Working Year.” Mayor Shimbilinga, a former teacher, used the occasion to deliver a broader message from Duinesig High School to the entire Walvis Bay community.
He described the start of the school year as a fresh chapter, encouraging learners in both primary and secondary schools to dream boldly and challenge themselves to go beyond their perceived limits. The mayor also expressed his appreciation to teachers, parents and all those involved in the education sector, acknowledging their role in shaping the future of the community. “Your work is the backbone of our community’s progress,” he said.
Learners also benefited from an informative and impactful presentation by the Coastal Drug Awareness Campaign (CODAC). The non-profit organisation highlighted the dangers of drug abuse, explaining how substance use can derail young lives, while equipping learners with practical tools to make informed and responsible choices. Following the school visit, Mayor Shimbilinga continued engaging with community members, reaffirming his commitment to education and broader community.
