The Namibian Ports Authority (Namport) has been ranked among Namibia’s top three best-governed commercial public enterprises in the inaugural IJG Annual Public Enterprise Governance Ranking 2026, securing a joint second-place position with an impressive score of 19 out of 20.

independent assessment evaluated commercial public enterprises over the five-year period from 2021 to 2025, measuring governance and performance through key indicators such as annual report publication, profitability, reliance on government funding and leadership stability.

Namport received full marks for transparency through annual reporting, financial independence from government fiscal transfers and chief executive officer stability, highlighting the organisation’s commitment to sound governance and strategic consistency. Executive: Commercial Department, Elias Mwenyo said in a statement that the ranking reflects the port authority’s remarkable financial turnaround. “After recording a N$44.6 million loss during the 2020/21 financial year, Namport rebounded strongly, reporting a profit of N$864.5 million by the 2024/25 financial year.”

He added that the recovery has been attributed to disciplined financial management, operational excellence and long-term strategic planning. “Among the milestones highlighted was Namport’s landmark 25-year partnership with Terminal Investment Limited (TIL), a subsidiary of Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), to operate the new container terminal at the Port of Walvis Bay.” According to Mwenyo the agreement is expected to strengthen Walvis Bay’s position as a key regional and international logistics hub.

He went on by saying that Namport has also expanded its commercial focus into emerging sectors, including offshore oil and gas and green hydrogen, positioning the Port of Walvis Bay as a strategic gateway for Namibia’s growing energy industry. Mwenyo, said the ranking demonstrates that strong governance and commercial success go hand in hand, adding that transparency, financial discipline and stable leadership have enabled the institution to deliver consistent results.

He also acknowledged the contributions of the Board of Directors, executive leadership, management and employees, describing the recognition as a collective achievement. Mwenyo says Namport remains committed to advancing Namibia’s trade and logistics ambitions through world-class port services while creating sustainable economic value for the country.
