Team Namibia received a morale-boosting visit from senior government and sporting leaders ahead of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, reaffirming the nation’s unwavering support for its athletes.
The delegation was led by Minister of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, Dr Sanet Steenkamp, accompanied by Namibia’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, H.E. Veiccoh K. Nghiwete, and Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) President Dr. Ndeulipula Hamutumwa. The visit underscored the strong backing Team Namibia enjoys from both government and the sporting fraternity as the athletes prepare to march under the national flag at the opening ceremony before beginning their respective campaigns. Meeting with the athletes and technical officials in Glasgow, the leaders offered words of encouragement and inspiration as Team Namibia prepares to compete on one of the world’s biggest multi-sport stages.
Addressing the team, High Commissioner Nghiwete praised the athletes and support staff for their preparation and urged the squad to compete with confidence and pride.
“I wish you all the best. Everything is ready for you, thanks to the administrators, coaches and everyone who worked to ensure the team is prepared,” he said.
He reminded the athletes that they were carrying the hopes of all Namibians. “We are doing this on behalf of those Namibians who could not be here. Maintain a positive attitude and enjoy what you know best. Just be your true, authentic self.” Minister Steenkamp echoed the message, encouraging the athletes to embrace the opportunity to represent Namibia with pride rather than focusing solely on medals.
Reflecting on the country’s support, she said it was a proud moment to see Namibia sending a well-prepared delegation of athletes, coaches, medical personnel and officials to the Games. “Today we’re not dignitaries, we’re all Namibians,” she told the team. “We’re kind-hearted people with great inner spirits, and we’re here to bring peace.” She urged the athletes to carry with them the words of encouragement that have shaped their journey, whether from family, coaches, teammates or loved ones.
“Go with what is in your heart. You know who you are. Be unapologetically Namibian. Represent yourself with the true values and spirit of our nation,” Steenkamp said.
With the Commonwealth Games now underway, Namibia’s representatives will look to translate that support into memorable performances on the international stage.
