Namibia’s Young Warriors will look to build on their winning start to the TotalEnergies U20 AFCON COSAFA Qualifiers when they face hosts Mozambique at 15:00 today 20 September.
Namibia opened their campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mauritius at Zipeto Stadium on Friday, 18 September, with captain Lukas Sakeus scoring the decisive goal. His performance earned him the Man of the Match award.
Head coach Lucky Kakuva said the opening victory was important for setting the tone for the tournament.
“The first match of the tournament is very important because it sets the tone for the rest of the competition. I am delighted with the result and proud of the boys for executing the game plan,” Kakuva said.
The coach admitted that Namibia could have been more clinical in front of goal, but was pleased with the team’s commitment and discipline. “We created opportunities and could have scored more goals, but what is important is that we got the result and the players showed commitment to the game plan.”
Ahead of the Mozambique clash, Kakuva also referred to as Lucky Shipanga in the team’s latest comments, said the squad is fully fit and prepared for what promises to be a demanding encounter. “We recognize the quality of Mozambique. They are a strong and physical team, and playing at home gives them an additional advantage. We respect that.
We respect their players, their supporters and their occasion,” he said. Despite the home advantage enjoyed by Mozambique, the Namibian camp remains confident. “Our approach is simple: respect the opponent, respect the game, and give everything for our country, Namibia,” the coach said.
He also urged his young players to show courage under pressure. “We are a young team, but youth does not mean a lack of courage or ambition. These young warriors understand what it means to wear the national colours.
They are hungry, they are determined, and they are ready to stand up for the challenge.” Namibia will be hoping that another disciplined performance can secure a positive result and strengthen their position in the competition.
